The Roofing Alliance, the charitable arm of the National Roofing Contractors Association, has unveiled a new training course and research report aimed at addressing heat stress in the roofing industry. The “Heat Stress for Roofers Training Course and Final Report” are now available for purchase in the NRCA’s online bookstore.

In a press release, the Roofing Alliance highlighted that its groundbreaking report and training modules provide “important industry heat stress data and its effects on roofers.” The resources cover a wide range of topics, including prevention strategies for heat-related illnesses, risk factors that contribute to heat stress, relevant policies and regulations, and guidance for developing a workplace heat-related illness prevention plan.

3 Objectives for Heat Stress Safety

Under the leadership of Dr. Kenneth Sands from Florida Gulf Coast University and funded by the Roofing Alliance, the research project was driven by three key objectives:

  1. Real-time Observation: Researchers closely observed roof technicians in action, studying their behaviors and responses while working under challenging hot conditions.
  2. Direct Inquiry: Roofing Alliance staff engaged directly with technicians to gather firsthand insights about their experiences working in hot environments, shedding light on the challenges they face and the coping strategies they employ.
  3. Comprehensive Data Collection: Using advanced monitoring techniques, the researchers recorded technicians’ core body temperatures and the environmental conditions they encountered. Rigorous equipment calibration and initial testing procedures ensured the reliability and accuracy of the data collected.

“We extend our sincere gratitude to the Roofing Alliance Task Force Chairman Rudy Gutierrez of Shell Roofing Solutions and his dedicated task force members, as well as Dr. Kenneth Sands and his team, for their exemplary efforts in developing this invaluable resource,”

Alison L. LaValley, Executive Director of the Roofing Alliance.

The “Heat Stress for Roofers Training Course and Final Report” are available free of charge for Roofing Alliance members. For NRCA members, the cost is $150, and non-members can purchase the resources for $300.
